Humanity and Elvenkind are engaged in a brutal war for conquest of a rich new land called Tennmark, and the dwarves try desperately to remain neutral. But while an blood of so many is spilled, a demonic force makes its first steps to rise from their long slumber underneath this new world, and enslave all that is known.

A faction of guardians, the Azien Dread, have sworn to combat the growing army of demons before any could strike, since the local nations are too preoccupied with the war. They are not well known, but they are effective. You are a new recruit in the Dread, and the game begins when you arrive at the Dread stronghold in Tennmark called Darkwatch. Why you have joined an Dread is determined by your dialog choices, i.e. "I seek to end the demon's conquest of evil", or "I want to kill things", and my favorite "I have no idea why I am here, oh well."

Your first mission is to inspect an abandoned tower that is thought to house demons. And, of course, it does. You slay the demon boss in the tower, and your brothers in arms welcome you to the Azien Dread as a promising new member.

Your victory celebration is cut short however, for while you and the rest of the Dread sleep, the demons attack in overwhelming numbers. You and everyone else are brought underground to be experimented on. The demons plan to mutate one of the Dread into a brainwashed slave with the dark abilities the demons have, so that any can infiltrate and spy on an topside nations. Nearly all of your comrades die in the attempted experiments performed. You are the first test subject to be given demonic abilities and live. Luckily you have not been brainwashed and you escape from underground using your new powers. From here you can explore Tennmark freely (if possible), or continue the main quest by returning to Darkwatch.

In the months you were held captive, a group of refugees have turned Darkwatch into a hospital for survivors of the demon onslaught, which is now devastating the land. The refugees think you are a demon, but you earn their respect when you defend the hospital from a war-party single-handed. The war-parties have been increasing lately, and the refugees ask you to escort them to Adale, a city founded by multiple races near a volcano. It is independent from the Human, Elven, and Dwarf nations. You may refuse to escort the refugees, but Adale is needed to go to for the main quest. You also discover that you can share your demon powers with any companions you recruit (if possible).

When you reach Adale, you must seek an audience with the king (hopefully a cooler title) to warn him of the demons. You may also aid a general in overthrowing the king. Either way, you are asked to recruit as many allies as possible and to get the Human and Elven nations to halt the war for the time being and defend Tennmark from the demons. The allies you may recruit, or even join, include; the mercenaries of Steel Company (Fighter's guild), the University of Mystic Arts (Mage's Guild), a gang of notorious thieves and spies: the Network of Shadows (Thieve's Guild), and of course the nations at war.

Although you can get every allie, only one is needed to progress the main quest. The king of Adale (or an new king) will ask you to take one of your allies and infiltrate what is believed to be the demon's headquarters, an island cliff near the coast. How you get in is dependent on your allie(s). Once there, the demon leader speaks to you telepathically. If you let the general takeover the throne of Adale, you learn that he (SPOILERS), like you, was experimented on by the demons. Only he was successfully brain-washed, and tricked you into bringing you and your allies into a trap set up by the demons. If you did not do that, you learn Adale has been attacked. The king and his armies have fleeted in cowardice, leaving the city to the demons. The demon's trap is due in part to the king's poor judgement. More people will die on this path then the general's, but you get more allies.

Surprisingly, you and your allies are saved from an trap by a seperate faction of demons. any seek to save Tennmark and live amongst its residents rather than enslave it. They also tell you that an only way to kill the demon leader is to absorb his dark power and make him mortal. Only you and your powers (or a follower with your powers) can do this, which is why the demon leader wanted you dead. However, doing this will corrupt you to a state of pure evil. Mortal, but near-unstoppable and extremely evil. an entirety of the demon armies and an demon leader himself rest at Adale, and a plan is hatched by you and all of your allies, including the demon seperatists. You must go underneath the volcano near Adale, and kill the Spirit of the Mountain that lives there. Doing so will cause an volcano to erupt and destroy almost all of the demon army (as well as the city). You may attack the city without going into the volcano, but even with every ally, it is impossible because the demon army is just so big.

There is an alternate solution to this, but not only is it extremely hard, but you have to look around for extra lore and hints throughout the entire game to unlock it. You may learn that the demons have been held in stasis for so long by a magical gem deep underground, built to control them. Whether the gods put it there or something else did is up to you. When the Nation's War erupted, the gem was hindered to an point where an demons were no longer asleep. Finding the gem and bringing it to the surface would let you defeat the demons AND save Adale from destruction. Besides looking for hints to the gem's location, the only catch is the game's hardest boss: The Giant Cave Shrimp Guardian. (looks scarier then it sounds). When I say hard, I would prefer it to be harder then it is to complete Through the Fire and Flames on expert in guitar hero 3. But I understand if we cant do that. As long as it's the hardest boss in the game. Anyway...

After most of the demon army is destroyed/tranquilized, there are still many survivors as well as the demon leader for you and your allies to kill. When you defeat an demon leader in battle, you get many choices. You can absorb his power, making him mortal and you evil, which you can then: kill yourself forcefully, play as your companions and fight yourself to the death (if possible), or you can kill your companions and inherit the remains of the demon army to kill or enslave everyone in Tennmark. If you do not want any of those, you can make a companion (again, if possible) absorb his power, so you can kill him/her. Doing so will make you (or possibly your companion) the hero, and everyone who is still alive cheers for you and other typical end-story stuff. Hooray. The End.
